Sol LeWittexhibition • 08 May 2010 – 29 May 2010
Site Gallery presents the exhibition Sol LeWitt: Artist’s Books, the only UK venue of this international exhibition. Curated by Chloe Brown and Martin Rogers, the show features more than 80 publications by LeWitt, and is a chronological display of the artist’s visual books dating from 1967 to 2002, providing a rare opportunity to see a complete overview of LeWitt’s work in this form.
“For an artist, the book is sometimes a secondary medium – a sort of preparatory exercise to explore more complex and challenging ideas, or simply a means to reflect on work in progress. For Sol LeWitt, the book is much more than this. It is the key to understanding his entire development; each successive book marks a phase in his artistic life, explaining the methods and meanings of his art.”
Giorgio Maffei, co-curator of the exhibition.
During the course of the exhibition, one of LeWitt’s wall drawings will be completed over the large gallery wall. Throughout his career, LeWitt produced more than 1,200 wall drawings, each work undertaken from a set of instructions and executed by LeWitt and other artists, his drafting team and volunteers. Continuing this tradition and working from his original rules Wall Drawing #960 will be produced, allowing visitors to see the work in progress.
