Come and celebrate the opening of this year’s Alternate Realities exhibition Collateral Echoes, a powerful new immersive work by artist and filmmaker Baff Akoto who will be introducing the event.
Collateral Echoes is a new immersive installation by artist and filmmaker Baff Akoto. Combining moving image, XR, archival interventions, poetry, politics and spoken word, the work commemorates Black and Immigrant Britons disproportionately killed after police contact since 1969.
Through testimonials and a powerful soundscape featuring Paapa Essiedu and the late Benjamin Zephaniah, Collateral Echoes memorialises those lost, while giving a voice to the communities who survive them. It confronts the legacies of Britain’s colonial past and the ongoing devaluation of Black lives, placing memory, mourning and resistance at the heart of the contemporary Black British experience.
The exhibition also explores the acts of care, connection, and cultural continuity within Black communities – providing a space for grief, remembrance, and the celebration of survival.
