Grace Schwindt offers an insightful walk through her new exhibition, with Site Gallery Artistic Director, Laura Sillars.
Journeying from 1960s-70s German political and social histories to the creation of new sculptures in glass sitting alongside the ambitiously choreographed film, Only a Free Individual Can Create a Free Society, this will be a special and intimate introduction to the work by the artist herself.
Grace’s film, co-commissioned by Site Gallery, explores the radical left-wing politics of Germany in the 1960s-70s. Taking an interview with a former activist taxi driver as the starting point, the artist weaves his words and memories through a theatrical setting to question political ideologies and the notion of freedom: how it was, and is understood; and who, if anyone, can really access it.
