During the period when the gallery was closed for lottery-funded redevelopoment, Site initiated a public art project – Site and Sound which placed artworks by 15 artists working with text and audio in venues around the city centre.

Jacqueline Donachie’s sound work was sited in the disused bus garage, Tony Kemplen’s sound work “The Odyssey” was sited in Waterstones’ bookshop, Craig Richardson’s “The Terror” was sited in The Graves Gallery Jade Collection, Virgil Tracy’s ” Have you Heard of Me” was sited in the public library.

Other works were sited in public toilets, bars, Yorkshire Artspace and on the pillars of The City Hall.

As a follow on project four of the exhibiting artists – Jacqueline Donachie, Tony Kemplen, Craig Richardson and Virgil Tracy were asked to develop their practice and produce a digital piece of work on CDRom – the resulting CD was funded by the Arts Council New Media Fund and is available from Cornerhouse Publications.
