Local composer Ben Gaunt has collaborated with artist Matt Stokes to explore the possibilities of communication in Matt’s new two-screen video and audio installation, In Absence of the Smoky God.
Ben’s free tour of the exhibition will draw on his experience of working with Matt to construct a new two-tier language for the post-apocalyptic world envisioned by the artist. Local vocalists perform as two different groups in the installation, and the conflicting vocal sounds they produce move closer to each other as the work progresses, from disharmony to harmony, eventually attempting to achieve union.
In Absence of the Smoky God has been jointly commissioned by Site Gallery and Sensoria as part of Sensoria 2014, the UK’s festival of music/film/digital, 27 September – 5 October.
