Directed by Faythe Levine and Sam Macon, the film examines the history of the craft, the desire to keep traditional elements alive, the impact of technology and an appreciation of the balance between art and commerce.

Artist Rory Pilgrim is continuing his long-term collaboration with Sheffield-based sign writer David Andrews during his current Platform residency, Words are not signs, they are years. Together they explore the power of words as Andrew’s hand-painted posters create a visual record of the cross-generational conversations occurring in the residency space.

Andrew’s posters have been seen throughout the city since the 1970s. This screening of Sign Painters will further explore the highly specialised, rarely-acknowledged artistry of the sign painter.

Following the screening join us for drinks and conversations about the film.

Copies of the book Sign Painters, is available to purchase from the Site Gallery shop. Published by Princeton Architectural Press in November 2012, the book features a foreword by legendary artist (and former sign painter) Ed Ruscha.
