People, Places, Process: The SHOPS Project
The publication documenting the two-year international SHOPS project was launched in London at The Ratiu Foundation and included a talk about the project from artists Rebecca French and Andrew Mottershead, hosted by British author, historian and curator Dr Mike Phillips OBE.
Talks to Lisa Murphy
Christine Hill talks to Lisa Murphy, a presentation, as part of The SHOPS Symposium. Hill whose project Volksboutique began as a thrift store/sculptural installation in Berlin back in the ’90s when she left New York and landed in Germany. Visitors would open the door to her underground shop, tea was served, clothes were cheap and people congregated to discuss topics ranging from identity and self presentation, to weather and the effect of tourism on the neighborhood.

To coincide with the exhibition FrenchMottershead – The SHOPS Project, Site Gallery is organised a symposium exploring the materiality of shops and shopping.
Shopping Landscapes: Photography Competition
As part of their visit to the FrenchMottershead Shops Project exhibition, which included an introduction from artists Rebecca French and Andrew Mottershead, art and photography students from various schools and colleges in the region were invited to interpret the theme ‘British Shopping Landscapes’, for a related photography competition.

The SHOPS Project
This exhibition is the first solo show by artists Rebecca French and Andrew Mottershead and is the culmination of their two-year international SHOPS project bringing together a collection of intimate portraits of local shops and contemporary urban life.
Shopping Landscapes: Rocky Horrors & Freshmans Boutique Shops Projects
Drawing on the themes explored within FrenchMottershead’s Shops residency and resulting exhibition at Site Gallery, young people worked over several weeks with the staff and customers of Freshmans Boutique and Rocky Horrors shops in Sheffield to produce a range of insightful photographs and interviews offering an intimate portrait of these everyday spaces.
Shopping Landscapes: I shop Therefore I Am
Inspired by a strand of the FrenchMottershead Shops Project which explores shopping habits in Romania, young journalists from Cube Magazine carried out their own creative investigation into the habits of Sheffield Shoppers for a feature in the magazine in print.
