The Site Young Apprentice Scheme [SYAS] gives 14 to 21 year olds from across South Yorkshire the opportunity to delve further into the arts sector by working more closely with the gallery through a variety of creative activities and projects. The scheme provides rare and insightful experiences for CVs and is ideal for young people interested in exploring a career in the arts, media or journalism sectors.
The scheme has recently involved young people in the gallery’s commissioning process for Site Platform and our online commissions. Seven apprentices from across South Yorkshire joined gallery staff and arts professionals to discuss, interview and shortlist artists to enable new works to be commissioned over the next few months. Later in the year, apprentices will work with artists on some of the chosen commissions.
In July 2010 the gallery piloted an intensive two week apprenticeship for eight young people [14 – 17] as a vocational extension of the SYAS. The pilot offered a practical insight into careers in the contemporary art sector through a range of exciting assignments and artists’ talks. Apprentices developed creative, media and workplace skills in a ‘real work’ style environment and led their own creative projects while working towards an Arts Award qualification and gaining a written reference outlining their achievements.
