Reading group: After-affects | after-images: Griselda Pollock

Do artists move away from or towards trauma? Our next free reading group will focus on the book, After-affects | after-images: Trauma and aesthetic transformation in the virtual feminist museum by Griselda Pollock.

We will explore some of the questions raised by Griselda about the experience of trauma in art, for both the artist and viewer, against the political backdrop of Grace’s film, Only a Free Individual Can Create a Free Society: How do artists process the after-affects of trauma, and how does the viewer encounter works bearing such traces of trauma?

Copies of the book are available to purchase from the Site Gallery shop.  A PDF of selected extracts will be sent to those who register.

Griselda Pollock is Professor of Social and Critical Histories of Art and Director of the Centre for Cultural Analysis, Theory and History at the University of Leeds.

Next reading group: Thursday 26 February, 6pm
Our next reading group will focus on Mechanical Ballets? by Susanne Lahusen, and the stage work of Bauhaus artist Oskar Schlemmer. More details coming soon.
