“It’s clear Site is very accommodating of the youth of Sheffield. I think what Site and similar galleries are doing is brilliant”.
Helen Maduka – young person writing for the Guardian
Site’s current education programme is dedicated to working with young people from across South Yorkshire to inspire involvement and enjoyment in contemporary art. The programme fuses together ideas emerging out of the exhibitions programme with the possibilities of innovative project work and extended strands such as artist talks, competitions and various contextual, media and journalism related opportunities. Recent projects have involved young people from Hatfield Visual Arts College, Aston Comprehensive, Sheffield Young Writers, Cube Magazine, Sheffield Hallam University and Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield colleges.
Recent education activity at a glance
“A key focus of the programme is finding inspiring and appropriate ways for young people to respond to ideas creatively and where possible offer the opportunity and motivation of getting their work seen by a wider audience”. Vicky Morris – Freelance Education Manager
The gallery has recently launched the Site Young Apprentice Scheme which offers 14 to 21 year olds with creative interests the opportunity to delve a little further into the arts sector through working more closely with the gallery on a variety of group projects and individual assignments.
Around 65 students from Aston Comprehension School and Rotherham, Doncaster and Sheffield Colleges recently visited the gallery for a Show & Tell with artists Andrew Mottershead and Rebecca French in their first solo exhibition at Site.
Drawing on the themes of community, identity and ritual explored within the FrenchMottershead’s SHOPS Project, young people worked with the staff and customers of Freshmans Boutique and Rocky Horrors shops in Sheffield, to produce a range of insightful photographs and interviews offering an intimate and perceptive portrait of these everyday spaces.
