TONIGHT! The Audacious Art Experiment with Screenadelica and Crow & Dunnage

You may not know all three of these names, so here is a short run through of what tonight promises.

Prepare for a spectacular audio and visual experience of DIY proportions! Including a special tape release by The Audacious Art Experiment and an exclusive video exhibition.

An evening with The Audacious Art Experiment who will bring the essence of the Screenadelica gig poster artwork to life with an evening of live gigs, impromptu performances and dj sets.

Screenadelica is a gig poster exhibition, celebrating the art of the screen printed gig poster, originating during Liverpool Sound City festival in 2010, the show has travelled to Barcelona for Primavera Sound festival, with planned shows at this years Bestival and another in Bordeaux in October.

The Audacious Art Experiment is a Sheffield based DIY collective made up of Musicians, Artists, Writers and Event Organisers.

“The Audacious Art Experiment is more than a record label, we’re a community mindset that yearns for something more than ‘nine to five’ and ‘shelf life culture’ and aim to take back our chosen social freedoms, artistic expressions and community spirit from the companies trying to sell them to us. Music is our voice and the records we make are the product of our beliefs, dreams and desires.”

TAAE will be releasing a new tape on the night by Trans/Human entitled “The 8 Hour Dance” for FREE. With the help of Crow & Dunnage, Sheffield’s premier screen printers, you’ll be able to screen, cut and assemble your own copy of the tape to take home, whilst the sounds of the bands swirl and blaze around you.

Collage Party and the results pinned on the gallery wall!

Collage Party on Wednesday went down a storm, a large table in the gallery filled with books from the geographic, to sporting history and sewing guidebooks from the 1960′s, and plenty of party-goers cutting, making new associations out of the print material, a mixture of beautiful and comedic arrangements. The plethora of materials that artist Elizabeth Rowe brought with her made for a fantastic large scale collage. Here are some pictures! The collage will remain in the gallery until the close of DIY Summer on 8th September. Thanks to Liz for returning to Sheffield (she previously held a Collage Party at Bloc Projects in Sheffield) and for working with us on the project!

[A] Quick Perspective of the Future

Theo Simpson and Ben Mclaughlin‘s books have been top sellers in the Site Gallery shop for a few years and on the very special occasion of launching a new book, ‘What We Buy’ – a beautifully printed work containing 4-Colour Process Screen prints of items all sold for under £1 in the UK – and a new print by Theo, ’132 Kv PL16′ – a transmission tower offset print – a special showing of these two works was held during DIY Summer, 27 – 30 August. [A] Quick Perspective of the Future, by a photographer and a designer both living and working in Sheffield.

Theo and Ben also joined Sheffield Publicity Department and Rotherham Zine Library on Saturday 27th to talk about the compromises and the commitment required by any artist, writer, photographer and designer persevering with self publishing. Together they produce works of artistic and creative integrity. With every technique learnt they have remained resolute in their pursuit of high quality, and passionate about the serious and often melancholy issues underlaying each project.

Consequently this has built them a notable following in the shape of The Aesthetic Trust, It’s Nice That, Grafik Magazine, Article Magazine, Art Review…We were so pleased to include them in our DIY Summer programme. Here are some photographs documenting the short exhibition and the launch event – a fantastic approach to utilising the space and presenting print material, in particular the pylon prints stacked on a wooden board on castors…

Crow & Dunnage screen printing action in the gallery!

We invited upcoming local screen printers, Crow & Dunnage to run two days of screen-printing in the gallery. We loved the idea of relocating their studio to open the process up to the public so we can all learn how they do it. Screen-printing is a technique which seems to be missed out on by many, even those attending art and design schools may have somehow evaded the opportunity.

One participant is a skilled lino-printer, translating his lino cut designs into screen-prints which he described as a process of alchemy. The screen-printing process is a rethinking of ideas into a medim involving fluid, a more physical process involving pressure and substances which repel one another.

Here are some snapshots of the first group, turning their designs into t-shirts and bags which are individually theirs and evidence of the skills they’ve picked up in a matter of hours!

Join us later today or tomorrow – it’s just £15 to take part and you can stay all day!

Book online or  just call into Site Gallery.

Zine and Self Publishing Talks – Saturday 27th

Culture Vulture drop in on DIY Summer!

We were visited by Mark from The Culture Vulture earlier in the week, on his cultural tour of the North!

He had some very nice things to say;

‘It was a very different kind of creativity that took me to Sheffield later in the afternoon. At the dazzling contemporary art space The Site Gallery, it was the launch party of their DIY Summer series. From today until September 7th, Site welcomes workshops, talks and events hosted by a range of cultural groups. And most importantly, visitors are encouraged to get stuck into the action: collaging the walls, screenprinting t-shirts, making zines, and much more.

As well as live music and beer from Thornbridge Brewery, Site welcomed Rotherham Zine Library, bringing to the city Sheffield’s first Zine Fayre. A desultory collection of curious, shocking, hilarious mini-magazines, the collection is stunning – colourful in every sense, with a breadth of topics and styles, from the ranting mini-jeremiads (a pocket-sized zine entitled ‘Why I Hate Chelsea FC’ instantly struck a chord) to collections of drawings and doodles, poems and play-pieces, and everything in between’.

‘A gallery like no other, Site’s DIY Summer is a chance for anyone and everyone to let their creativity shine too.’

Sheffield Publicity Department – Tree Rubbings workshops

Todays weather forecast was severely mistaken, the sun shone brightly on Sheffield Publicity Department as they spent a day between Site Gallery and the glorious incline of Park Hill. Ben, Jon and Gemma, wearing their classic SPD team uniform, took groups on a fantastic venture up to Sheffield’s most famous architectural landmark to make one-off tree rubbing posters!

Site Gallery commissioned SPD to make their beautiful tree rubbing kits (which will be available to buy from the Site shop so you can take your crayons and make your SPD poster anywhere!). Each participant received a kit with their choice of limited edition colour crayons, and after signing up in the gallery they joined their guides to discover the suprising variety of trees in suburban Sheffield,  just a moments walk from the city centre station. There was also new appreciation for what makes a good pattern where leaves and bark are concerned – children and grown-ups alike taking notice of the beautiful nature growing in our city.

See what else Sheffield Publicity Department do here! Thank you from us to SPD for their inspiration and enthusiasm – our first DIY Summer workshop!
