E-Vapor-8 at Site Gallery
Join us for a special Sunday afternoon exploring the legacy of rave culture and the underground dance scene in the early 90s! The E-Vapor-8 study day will be a lively and informal event, combining the voices, music producers, artists in the exhibition, writers and researchers, and will be chaired by the exhibition’s curator, Francesca Gavin.
Francesca Gavin, curator of the exhibition and Visual Arts Editor at Dazed and Confused Magazine will discuss how she identified a fascination with rave culture and happy hardcore by young British and American artists, and how this led her to present this exhibition, first at 319 Scholes, New York and now at Site Gallery, Sheffield.
Featuring presentations by E-Vapor-8 artists: Jeremy Deller, Adham Faramawy, Harry Burden, Lucy Stokton and Rhys Coren, each of whom relate to rave culture in different ways. Whether they actively participated or became indirectly influenced by rave, the artists explore ideas of community, technology, intellectual and physical freedoms, rebellion and myth making in their work. Rave culture increasingly manifests itself in contemporary art, exploring the freedoms and fears of a hyper-technological society, or reviving the visual markers of the era in reference to present desires and concerns.
Guest speakers include: Winston Hazel, DJ and producer, and Professor Alice O’Grady, University of Leeds. Further speakers to be confirmed soon.
This Study Day is open to the public and will particularly appeal to artists, former-ravers, academics, journalists, musicians, those interested in discussion of rapidly evolving technologies, the future of democratization, social and creative freedoms and memory.
